Which professional should you consult?

Twelve professions regulated by an order in Québec. Here is what each one does, to help you find your bearings.

You don't have to choose

When submitting a request, you can indicate that you don't know which professional to consult. Your request is then shown to several types of professionals, and those who believe they can help will reach out.

Psychologist

OPQ

Assesses psychological and mental functioning, makes a diagnosis and intervenes (including psychotherapy) to restore psychological health. Holds a doctorate.

Neuropsychologist

OPQ

A psychologist specialising in the link between the brain and behaviour: assesses memory, attention, language and cognitive functions (ADHD, learning disorders, neurological sequelae).

Social worker

OTSTCFQ

Assesses social functioning and supports the person through personal, family and social difficulties, in connection with those around them and their living environment.

Psychoeducator

OPPQ

Assesses adjustment difficulties and adaptive capacities, then intervenes concretely in daily life to restore balance.

Sexologist

OPSQ

Assesses and intervenes on sexual and relational difficulties: psychosexual development, identity, dysfunctions, couple life.

Marriage and family therapist

OTSTCFQ

Works with couples and families to improve communication and untangle relational conflicts.

Psychiatrist

CMQ

A physician specialising in mental health: diagnoses mental disorders and can prescribe medication as well as medical follow-up.

Occupational therapist

OEQ

Helps regain or maintain the ability to carry out everyday activities (work, studies, personal care) despite a physical or mental health problem.

Nurse

OIIQ

Assesses physical and mental health and provides follow-up; in mental health, contributes to assessment and support (some hold a psychotherapy permit).

Guidance counsellor

OCCOQ

Supports school and career choices and career transitions; assesses psychological functioning related to orientation.

OPCQ

Works on problematic behaviours linked to crime and victimisation, with offenders as well as victims.
