Psychoeducator
Assesses adjustment difficulties and adaptive capacities, then intervenes concretely in daily life to restore balance.
What that means
Psychoeducation happens in daily life rather than in an office: at home, at school, at work — wherever the adjustment difficulty actually shows up. Assessing adaptive capacities is reserved to members of the OPPQ.
The intervention is concrete: routines, markers and ways of doing things that are put in place and adjusted. It is a profession much called upon with children and adolescents, without being limited to them.
When to turn to a psychoeducator
- The difficulty shows up in concrete everyday situations.
- You are looking for practical means of action rather than introspective work.
- It concerns a child or adolescent, at home or at school.
Frequently asked questions
Is it only for children?
No. Psychoeducation applies at any age, even though it is often called upon in school and family settings.
How is it different from psychotherapy?
The focus is on adaptation within the living environment and on concrete means. Some psychoeducators also hold the psychotherapy permit.
Checking that a professional is in good standing
Every professional order keeps a public register of its members: that is where you confirm someone holds the right to practise. On PsyPsy, this check is done upfront — the licence and membership in the order are validated before a professional can contact anyone.
PsyPsy is not an emergency service
PsyPsy connects people; it does not provide care and makes no diagnosis. In an emergency, call 911. To speak with someone now: Info-Social 811, option 2.
