OPQOrdre des psychologues du Québec

Psychologist

Assesses psychological and mental functioning, makes a diagnosis and intervenes (including psychotherapy) to restore psychological health. Holds a doctorate.

What that means

“Psychologist” is a reserved title: no one may use it without being listed on the register of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec. Assessing psychological and mental functioning is among the activities reserved to them, and a doctorate has been the entry point to the profession since 2006.

Many psychologists practise psychotherapy, but the two are not the same: psychotherapy is separately regulated and is also practised by other professions holding the permit issued by the OPQ.

When to turn to a psychologist

Frequently asked questions

Psychologist or psychotherapist: what's the difference?

“Psychologist” is a profession and a reserved title regulated by the OPQ. “Psychotherapist” is a permit, also issued by the OPQ, which members of other professions can obtain. A psychologist is therefore not automatically a psychotherapist, and a psychotherapist is not necessarily a psychologist.

Do I need a medical referral?

No. You can approach a psychologist in private practice directly, without going through a physician.

Checking that a professional is in good standing

Every professional order keeps a public register of its members: that is where you confirm someone holds the right to practise. On PsyPsy, this check is done upfront — the licence and membership in the order are validated before a professional can contact anyone.

PsyPsy is not an emergency service

PsyPsy connects people; it does not provide care and makes no diagnosis. In an emergency, call 911. To speak with someone now: Info-Social 811, option 2.
