Physician
Assesses overall health, can make a diagnosis and prescribe medication, and refers to a specialized resource when needed.
What that means
A family physician is often the first door: they assess health as a whole, can make a diagnosis, start or adjust medication, and refer to a specialised resource when the situation calls for it. They are members of the Collège des médecins du Québec.
Medicine and psychotherapy are not the same thing. The law allows a physician to practise psychotherapy without a separate permit, as it does a psychologist, but not every physician offers it: each profile says so.
When to turn to a physician
- Medication is at stake, to be started, adjusted or reviewed.
- You want an overall medical assessment before choosing a direction.
- You need a referral to a specialised resource.
Frequently asked questions
Physician or psychiatrist?
Both are physicians and members of the same college. A psychiatrist has specialised in mental disorders; a family physician follows health as a whole and refers to psychiatry when necessary.
Can a physician offer psychotherapy?
Yes, the law allows it without a separate permit. On PsyPsy, a physician who offers it says so in their profile; the others offer assessment and medical follow-up.
Checking that a professional is in good standing
Every professional order keeps a public register of its members: that is where you confirm someone holds the right to practise. On PsyPsy, this check is done upfront — the licence and membership in the order are validated before a professional can contact anyone.
PsyPsy is not an emergency service
PsyPsy connects people; it does not provide care and makes no diagnosis. In an emergency, call 911. To speak with someone now: Info-Social 811, option 2.
